Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born April 4th April 1972. She was raised by her grandmother and she was an only child. Scott completed her studies at The Philadelphia High School for Girls. Then she enrolled in Temple University. She studied secondary education over her time at Temple University while working on two other jobs. She planned to become an high school English teacher. The dream of becoming an English teacher in high school was cut short after she quit school. Being a poet, she began performing in poetry performances live. She later teamed with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form the group. They were able to collaborate in writing You Got Me. In a Roots show she came out in the spotlight as an artist. The show led to collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. She gained more knowledge of the stage when she appeared in the Canada tour of the Broadway show Rent. She was hired to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
